Don't resist the Bands

Resistance bands are a great item to incorporate into a workout. Typically the portability seems to be what makes them most attractive. As it turns out these can be more than just fitness tools for when people are on vacation. Resistance bands can create new challenges for developing muscles and physical strength. Unlike a dumbbell or barbell the resistance is always active with the bands. Because of this the muscles are always being engaged and activated at all points and angles in an exercise. This can translate into better overall gains at a higher rate.

Strength vs. Aesthetics

Bodybuilding has come a long, long way. What was centuries ago as a very raw indulgence of building muscles that signified beauty and strength, is today an almost mainstream sport. The evidence of naked and ripped Greek and Roman statues stands as proof to the fact that people with such physiques were worshipped as Gods. Most of the ancient world imagined their Gods with muscular physiques who could do anything and everything. Fast-forward a few thousand years, and the early era of bodybuilding saw people like Eugene Sandow and Charles Atlas performing great feats of strength to impress audiences. Back in those days, bodybuilding was not a thing of commoners. People associated muscular men with rogues or circus freaks that traveled to different towns to show off their muscular physiques and entertain people.

The Lat Pulldown, with no hands?

All weightlifters are familiar with the infamous lat pull-down. The different hand positions, choices of handles and bars, close, mid and wide grips. Though has anyone considered no grip at all? Making use of the straps used for abdominal leg raises creates a movement that better isolates the latissimus dorsi muscles. The typical lat pulldown variations are great but they make use of the arms which divides focus away from the arms. Best known as the Thib Pulldown, this may be good if a compound movement is desired, but to better engage and stimulate the lats try letting go so to speak. Have a look at this video to see this technique in action.

Add some weight to your Yoga

Including weights into a yoga practice can have tremendous benefits for fitness enthusiasts hoping to add a new dimension to their exercise routine. Combining the demands of balance and focus found in Yoga with some heavy lifting facilitates a physically invigorating workout. Typically there is no need to go too heavy, no more than 5 to 10 pounds. The Yoga positions call upon the small stabilizing muscles around the joints. Adding some weight resistance strengthens them. The overall long term benefits improves balance that will benefit all other athletic activities including bodybuilding.

Have a look at this video for an examples of how weights are implemented into a work out.

How Vertical Jumps Can Transform Your Fitness

When you look at your training schedule, it probably goes a little something like this: a day for legs, a few exercises to target bis and tris, a healthy heap of compound movements, some isolation work, and squats for days. Jumping isn't likely on the list. Sure, basketball and football athletes might have some plyometric jumps as a part of their practice, but the training usually ends there.

Incorporating bounce time isn't just for those players—learning to jump properly can complement any fitness effort, no matter what your activity. "Bringing at least some jump training into your normal routine can have advantages for strength, injury prevention, and intensity," says licensed physical therapist Brad Leavelle. Jumping is also mentally advantageous for both learning a new skill and overcoming hesitation (which many people have without knowing it).
