Chip Kelley, Competitive Texas Bodybuilder

Based out of the Dallas, Texas area Chip Kelley is a bodybuilder who describes himself as, overcoming a lifelong affliction to being skinny. Recently on the weekend of 8/25/17 Kelley participated in the 2017 NPC JohnnieJackson Classic Bodybuilding Show. He competed in the open light heavyweight class against 8 other competitors. Kelley credits his good placement in the show to his good physical conditioning. Finishing in a close second place Kelley proudly proclaims that he was the oldest competitor in his class.

“Age is just a number, never an excuse.”

He credits what gave him an edge was being able to maintain a lean appearance through good conditioning. Show judges even gave feedback that Kelley was one of the leanest competitors on stage. Kelley emphasizes, through good conditioning even a novice competitor can stand out among the rest with an extremely lean ripped appearance. This is especially true when other competitors are self coached or may struggle with their diet.

Kelley trains at a couple of gyms. Legends Gym in Rockwall TX, which is co-owned by his longtime coach, training partner, and friend TJ Clark. The other, Destination Dallas in Plano TX, which is also the North American home for Gasp/Better Bodies clothing, also where many of the company's sponsored athletes train.

Kelley trains 5-6 times a week. He follows a standard bodybuilding diet including foods like chicken, beef, fish, rice, sweet potato, and oatmeal. When prepping he reduces carbs and may replace them with fats. For supplements he usually will take some aminos during a workout occasionally combined with carbohydrate powder. His preferred protein powder is Beverly Nutrition UMP.

For the best dieting plan Kelley says,

“The tried and true bodybuilding diet approach has worked for all the greats, so it works for me. We may cycle carbs to have periodic high days while in prep mode; that is about as fancy as it gets.”

When preparing to appear on stage Kelly does a final body shave a couple of days prior to the show date. He emphasizes that the skin should be very dry to ensure the spray tan can fully absorb. Remarking that tanning is the worst part but it is clearly worth doing correctly as it plays a huge factor in stage appearance. The Jackson show was his first experience with Magic Tan which seems to work well for those with sensitive skin.

After his success at the Jackson show he already plans to compete again next year intending to add more pounds of muscle during the off season.

Outside of bodybuilding Kelley works for a software company where he manages and consults customers around software development for cloud computing. Kelley enjoys ice hockey and plays for a couple recreational teams. He also enjoys traveling whenever he can which his job allows him to do for business. He has been able to travel to Iceland, Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia.
